Optical splitter, in addition to OLT and ONT units, is one of the basic elements found in passive optical networks (PON). The task of splitters is to divide the optical path, and thus the transmission power, symmetrically or asymmetrically. They are completely passive elements, which means they do not require any energy source for their operation. Thanks to the use of splitters, it is possible to provide Internet access, television and telephony (Triple Play) services to up to 128 subscribers in GPON networks via a single fibre.

Fibre optic splitters can be divided into several types. We distinguish between splitters of the following types:

  • FBT (Fused Biconical Taper)
  • PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit)
  • FPLC (Non-uniform Planar Lightwave Circuit)

OPTO's PLC splitters are a group of optical fibre components made using planar technology. PLC splitter circuits are fabricated using lithography on a silica glass or semiconductor substrate, enabling them to distribute the optical fibre signal precisely and uniformly. The advantages of the technology make PLC splitters widely used in extensive fibre optic networks, where it is crucial to provide a stable and uniform signal in terms of quality to multiple subscribers.

We offer PLC splitters that support transmission in the full 1260-1650nm wavelength range. Depending on the model, they divide the optical signal into 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 equal output ports. They are based on G.657A1 fibre in ITU-T standard with different fibre sizes and lengths from 1m to 3m. Splitters are available with fibre in painted sheath (250µm), coloured sheath (900µm) and yellow patchcord sheath (2.0mm). They are available in ABS housing, steel housing and LGX modules. ABS enclosures made from tough plastic create a durable design, dedicated for use in switchgear or areas subject to damage. The compact steel enclosures provide high strength and resistance to harsh installation conditions. Their small size allows splitters to be installed in splice sockets or trays. The use of LGX modules facilitates the rapid connection, addition and replacement of individual fibre optic network components, and the standardisation of dimensions allows components from different manufacturers to be installed in the same ICT cabinet. PLC splitters are available without connector terminations (designed for splicing) or in any connector configuration.
