Optical splitter, in addition to OLT and ONT units, is one of the basic elements found in passive optical networks (PON). The task of splitters is to divide the optical path, and thus the transmission power, symmetrically or asymmetrically. They are completely passive elements, which means they do not require any energy source for their operation. Thanks to the use of splitters, it is possible to provide Internet access, television and telephony (Triple Play) services to up to 128 subscribers in GPON networks via a single fibre.

Fibre optic splitters can be divided into several types. We distinguish between splitters of the following types:

FBT (Fused Biconical Taper)
PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit)
FPLC (Non-uniform Planar Lightwave Circuit)

OPTO's FBT optical splitters are a group of optical components made using fibre splicing and stretching technology. Their simple construction, asymmetrical signal splitting and technological limitations make FBT splitters mainly used in less extensive passive fibre optic networks, network monitoring installations or laboratory applications, where the quality requirements and configuration of fibre optic signal splitting are lower.

Our product range includes FBT splitters supporting transmission at 1310/1490/1550nm wavelengths and split ratios: 1/99, 5/95, 10/90, 20/80, 30/70, 40/60, and are based on G.657A1 fibre in ITU-T standard, with 0.9mm sheath diameter and 1m length. FBT optical splitters are available without connectors (designed for splicing) or with SC/APC connectors. Thanks to the use of a steel housing, the product is characterised by its high strength and resistance to harsh installation conditions, and its compact size facilitates installation in fibre optic switches and couplers.
